The UK Flood History Database accompanies the British Rainfall Digital Archive
(BRDA) to provide a catalogue of UK inland flooding events over the archive period of 1860 – 1968 but extended up to the start of 2020 making use of data from a variety of sources. Some events prior to the start of British Rainfall are included, where they
have been referred to in later British Rainfall publications.
The Database has 3 files, a MS-XL spreadsheet containing entries of over 500 flood
events, a list of references, and a document of visual references including photos from
many of the events. The spreadsheet lists the date of the event, the key cause, the
areas and rivers affected and notes on the meteorology, hydrology and damage. The
main reference source of the event is also given and columns giving a list of rainfall
maps from the BRDA and whether photos are available in the visual references.
A few more details on the meteorology are given often where flooding was not
attributed to once single weather event but to a sequence of depressions as is
commonly the case in the UK. Other notes describe when an event was caused by a
small depression moving north from continental Europe often with thunderstorms, or
a slow-moving depression which can bring an easterly airstream off the North Sea with
prolonged rain. Where possible rainfall depths are given in mm at a particular location
for a given duration.
Information on the resulting damage is given, with later events providing more details
as these are readily available from web based sources but also damage was not
always quantified as a metric for flooding for earlier events.
