Global - Historical Tropical Storm Post-Event Data (Hazards + Economic Losses/Damages) - Kinetic Analysis

This geospatial dataset offers hazard footprints for a historical tropical cyclone of your choice (please specify which storm(s) you'd like data for in your purchase request). The hazard footprints include the spatial distribution of maximum wind speeds, storm surge inundation depth, significant wave height, and cumulative rainfall associated with the tropical cyclone over its lifetime. The data are generated at 30 arc-second (~1 km) resolution and provided as shapefiles. Hazard data are available in a variety of categories. For example, winds can be in units of mph or m/s or as Saffir-Simpson Scale categories.

The storm-specific hazard footprints are based on two different data sources. The first source is for storms with best-track data from the NHC or JTWC available through IBTRaCS. The second source is ATCF a-deck data for recent storms where best-track data has yet to be submitted to IBTRaCS. The data are used as inputs to our in-house, advanced oceanic and atmospheric numerical models. Depending on availability, a sample of data we use as model inputs includes: 1) storm location, 2) maximum intensity, 3) radius of maximum winds, and 4) wind radii in four quadrants for a variety of winds speeds.

We also offer hazard footprints based on best-track data from other designated Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) for a given region (e.g., the Japanese Meteorological Agency for the western North Pacific or Météo France La Réunion for the southwest Indian Ocean). If you would like your data to be generated from a RSMC (that is not NHC), please specify so in your purchase request. Otherwise the default option is as stated in the paragraph above (based on NHC, JTWC, etc.).

Estimates of economic impacts are provided at Admin Level 0 (national), 1 (e.g., state) and, if available 2 (e.g., county). Note that economic impacts for historical storms are provided in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) in US dollars and account for impacts caused by tropical cyclone winds and storm surge affecting our most recent update to our proprietary global exposure data, not the estimated exposure at the time of the event. Loss data are provided as shapefiles.
