Styria Thunderstorm and Hail Climate Atlas - Open Data Austria

The climatography of Styria was completely revised and updated on behalf of the province of Styria in a multi-year project. In its new form, the Climate Atlas of Styria offers more than 150 colored maps in which relevant climate elements are presented and interpreted in graphically fascinating form. In addition, extensive information on regional climatic basics, the methodology of mapping and a variety of meteorological details with reference to the province of Styria in the extended technical texts are available.

The colored climate maps are based on the meteorological data from the period 1971-2000 from a comprehensive network of more than 660 weather stations, which were comprehensively integrated into the evaluation. In addition to the usual elements such as temperature, precipitation, clouds, radiation and wind, the presentation of the combinations of parameters attempts to comprehensively cover the requirements for the information potential of a modern climate atlas.

Thunderstorms are spectacular weather phenomena in which almost always meteorological elements interact in a typical way. These include electrical discharges with their optical and acoustic concomitants such as lightning and thunder and violent convective precipitation, with showers, torrents, hail and violent gusts of wind, caused by the avalanche-like crashes of cooled by the rain air packets.

The presentation of the average number of thunderstorms in the year, as well as the annual course of the thunderstorm frequency, is based on the ALDIS observations. In addition to the frequencies in the various regions of Styria, these are shown in detail for the Graz University, Glashütten and Irdning-Gumpenstein stations.
