The Swedish flood dataset shows the area flooded with a severe flood having a 5m out-of-bank flood depth. The data was generated by attributing the 5m depth to selected main river reaches then using cell based modelling routines in ArcGIS and a 100m resolution digital terrain model to map the extent of this flooding.
Return periods were assigned to different river reaches using information on river flows and river water levels provided by the Swedish state hydrological services in the form of flow level rating tables and flood frequency curves. In many places the 5m out-of-bank flood depth corresponds to a very long return period, in excess of 1000 years so it could be considered as an extreme flood outline.
