Portugal - Wildfire Hazard - Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forestry of Portugal

In mainland Portugal, the high damage resulting from the destruction of vast areas of stands and other forest areas due to forest fires justifies the need to assess the danger of forest fires.

The danger of forest fire reflects the degree of possibility of affectation of a certain place through a forest fire.

The forest fire hazard charts presented were produced based on the CSP ( Cover, Slope and Probability ) methodology developed by the National Forestry Authority, by Dr. João Verde (see attached article in the zip files). The charts were generated in raster format, using map algebra tools and using the following base information:

Soil occupation letter of 2007 Level 3 (COS2007). Slope chart produced from the Pan-European Digital Elevation Model (MDE), based on the weighted average fusion of the SRTM and ASTER GDEM altimetric measurements. Cartography of burned areas (data from the previous 20 years are used for each year).

The hazard values obtained were reclassified using the quintiles method for the entire territory of mainland Portugal.
